Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- ½ lb. ground sausage (bulk or Italian)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 8 ounces mushrooms, thickly sliced
- ½ yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon marjoram
- 3 cups marinara sauce
- Kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper
- 6 English muffins
- 2 ounces pepperoni, diced
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Brown the meat:
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and sausage. When the meat is about halfway browned, add the butter, mushrooms, and onions. Continue cooking until the meat is fully browned, the mushrooms are tender, and the onions are soft. - Add seasoning:
Reduce heat to medium-low. Add the garlic and marjoram, cooking for 1 minute while stirring constantly. - Simmer the sauce:
Stir in the marinara sauce. Season with kosher salt and black pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 7–10 minutes to allow flavors to meld. - Toast the muffins:
Split the English muffins and place them on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Toast under the broiler until lightly browned. - Assemble the pizza burgers:
Spoon the meat mixture evenly over each toasted muffin half. Top with diced pepperoni and sprinkle generously with shredded mozzarella. - Broil:
Return the muffins to the broiler for 2–3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Notes & Tips
- You can substitute pizza sauce for marinara. If using marinara, simmer it a bit longer to thicken.
- Stack the pepperoni slices and cut them into halves or quarters for easy even topping.
- Always toast the English muffins first to prevent sogginess.
- Hamburger buns can be used, but toast them well. Trim the tops if needed so they sit flat.
- Do not broil parchment paper — it can catch fire. Use aluminum foil instead.
